Lesson 5 - The Seven Churches: Philadelphia & Laodicea

1. What church of Asia is used to represent the very last stage of Christ’s church on earth? Rev. 3:14. Note I. — This is the church of Laodicea. The meaning of Laodicea is “judging of the people”, which means in this last church, there is going to be judgement.

2. Through what experience must believers in the last generation pass? Verses 10, 11; 2Th. 2:9, 10. Rev. 12:17. Note 2. — They will go through persecution, because the dragon is wroth with the woman and makes war with the remnant of her seed, which is the last generation who have the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Satan will work very hard to have the people in the last days fall, deceiving so that they do not receive righteousness. There will be an hour of temptation upon all the world in the last days, to try them, for Jesus is coming soon.

3. What is the promise to the overcomer in the message to Philadelphia? Rev. 3:12. — The promise to the overcomer is that they will have new Jerusalem written upon him, and they will be given a new name.

4. Against what tendencies must the latter-day believers guard? Mat. 24:12; 2Ti. 3:1-5. — They must not fall into iniquity, be lovers of their own selves, become covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy (2 Timothy 3:2), be without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good (2 Timothy 3:3), traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God (2 Timothy 3:4), and having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away (2 Timothy 3:5). These are the tendencies that the latter-day believers need to guard, or they will fall.

5. How is the speaker to the Laodiceans described? Rev. 3:14. Note 3. — The speaker is described as the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God. He is described as the ‘Amen’ because he will be giving the final Word to the churches.

6. What reproof is sadly given? Verses 15, 16. — The church of Laodicea is neither hot nor cold. They do not understand their condition. Laodicea is lukewarm, and is spewed out of the mouth of God.

7. What makes the condition more deplorable? Verse 17, first part. —Satisfaction in a profession of the truth. — They say and think that they are rich and increased with goods, in need of nothing.

8. What condition does this high and correct profession cover? Verse 17, last part. — They are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.

9. What counsel is given? Verse 18. What is the gold? Jam. 2:5; Eph. 2:7, 8. What the raiment? Isa. 61:10. What the anointing? Isa. 61:1. — The counsel is given to those who have the Laodicean condition, to buy gold, tried in fire that they may be rich in faith and His grace. White raiment, which is robe of righteousness (garment of salvation), that they may be clothed, and they would not be ashamed of their nakedness. And lastly, eyesalve to anoint the eyes with good tidings, so that they may see.

10. How shall this experience come?—By the surrender to the love of Jesus as the needy, common sinners that we are. 1Ti. 1:15; I John 1:8, 9.

— We must realize our condition. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. We must confess our sins, and be cleansed from all unrighteousness.

11. What encouragement is in the reproof itself? Rev. 3:19. — Reproof is given because of love. Because He loves, he rebukes and chastens, so that you may be zealous and repent.

12. Must the sinner search far to find the Savior? Verse 20, first part. — The sinner doesn’t need to reach far, for Jesus is already outside the heart, knocking at the door.

13. What is the needy soul to do?—Only to hear, open the heart’s door; no longer hold it shut. Verse 20; John 14:23. — The needy soul is the one on the other side of the door. They are to open it to Christ, who is knocking outside. But in the heart, there can only be one who comes in — either Jesus, or love of the world, flesh, and self — which is Satan. The needy soul is to clear out their heart from any unwanted sin, and make ready for Jesus to come in and dwell inside.

14. What does Christ long to do? Rev. 3:20, last part. Note 4. — Christ wants to come into the heart of the needy soul, “will sup with him, and he with me”. Jesus wants to take our sins, and give His righteousness to us. 2 Cor 5:21

15. What is the final promise and exhortation? Verses 21, 22. — The promise is given to the overcomer that they will be granted to sit with Jesus in his throne, even as He overcame, and Jesus will sit with his Father, in His throne. We see once again the same message given, whosoever hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the seven churches. That means, as we read the messages given to these churches, may we also hear and do.

Conclusion: What I’ve learned this past week is that Laodicea is the last church, starting from 1852* all the way to the second coming of Jesus Christ. (*according to Temcat) Laodiceans have the worst condition, being reproofed the most, because they cannot choose between loving God, or loving the world. They profess to love God, but they are like the world, which is why they are described as lukewarm.

‘Laodicea’ means ‘judged’, which means in this last church, there is judgement. That’s why the message that was given to this church is reminded that they need to guard themselves from their natural evil tendencies. Satan is going to work hard, deceiving and doing everything he can to make them fall. Those who are not deeply rooted in the Word of God will be sent strong delusions, that they might believe a lie. The laodicean condition is thinking that they don’t need God. They think they already secured heaven, that they don’t need to work out their own salvation. They think they are increased with goods, but in reality, they are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.

But there is a solution for this condition. Laodiceans need to buy of gold, white raiment, and eyesalve. Gold represents the faith and love of Jesus Christ. White raiment is the righteousness of Jesus Christ, and eyesalve is having the Holy Spirit (which is the spirit of Father in Christ) to teach

and guide us, so that we can be able to distinguish between right and wrong and be able to ‘see’ the hidden truths and messages in the Word of God.

To receive these things, we must carefully study the Word of God, and pray diligently for Holy Spirit to help us understand. We must surrender our lives completely to Christ. Jesus is outside the door of our hearts, knocking, wanting to enter. He will not force himself, he gives you the choice to open it for him.

We must allow him to come inside, but first, we need to make sure that there are no other dwellers in the heart. No sin, no self, no pride, and no flesh. Because Satan and Jesus cannot abide together. We are in the last days. We are in the condition of Laodicea. We must take this message wholeheartedly that we must repent, for judgement is upon us. We need to realize our condition and buy of Him what we need so that we too can receive eternal life. We cannot be in the world or we will get strong delusions, that we might believe a lie. Satan is working especially hard to have us fall, but in the last days, there will be 144,000 who will prove Satan wrong and will have the character of Christ, who will overcome just as Christ overcame, while still being alive and they will never see death. The promise given to the overcomer is that we will sit down with Jesus at his throne, and Jesus will sit down next to his Father.
